The OHM faces an increasing need to prove
its contribution for better productivity and
economic benefits within business companies.
A suitable way to fulfil this requirement
is to integrate the OHM into the strategic
business management systems. One widespread
management tool is the Balanced
Scorecard (BSC). The BSC concept strives to
facilitate the business strategy by means of
value-based targets and measurable key indicators.
Basically, BSC and OHM have corresponding
concepts. However, human attitudes and
behaviour patterns – which obviously have
an impact on occupational health and productivity
– cannot be directly quantified as
the BSC concept requires. Therefore evidence
based health principles are a good guideline
for the selection and control of specific OHM
measurements.
The “Healthy-BSC” that is presented in the
article is based on the principle of balance
(i.e. equilibration). Equilibration has shown to
have dual benefits: it expresses an up-to-date
comprehensive definition of health and this
principle has an evident impact on a sustainable
company existence. Balanced structures
can be identified on individual and cooperative
aspects as well as the market level of a
business enterprise.
A purposive equilibration of these business
structures will occur within the four perspectives
of the original BSC. The assessment
of the equilibrated structures should commonly
be conducted by experienced leaders
and personnel, and should pursue the overall
business strategy.
The Healthy-BSC is not a stand-alone
management tool. Its elements should rather
be integrated reasonably into the variety of
existing business scorecards. Hereby the
Healthy-BSC contributes to the further development
of the BSC concept and substantiates
its idea of a balanced business action.
