The number of patients complaining about environmentally related syndromes such as multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS), idiopathic environmental intolerance (IEI), chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), sick-building syndrome (SBS) and candida syndrome (CS) is increasing. Typically, such patients mention a combination of unspecific symptoms. Normally there are no pathological results in clinical laboratory and medical examinations, which are often extremely comprehensive and expensive. There are many studies that show psychosomatic, affective and panic disorders and especially somatoform disorders. Illness possibly of environmental origin is in many cases a special form of environment-related somatoform disorders. Environmental syndromes are a challenge for modern environmental medicine. In addition to scientific environmental medicine a kind of “alternative“ environmental medicine has emerged, which can contribute to the aggravation of environmental syndromes.
