Epidemics in animals and zoonoses are and will continue to be a potential risk for farm animals and for human health in spite of considerable advances in diagnostics, prophylaxis and treatment. Persons in contact with animals and animal materials at work are potentially exposed to an extensive spectrum of animal-specific pathogens and so are subject to a much higher risk of infection and disease than are other members of the general population. From the numerous zoonoses listed on this website (www.lgl.bayern.de/zoonosenweb/) which are currently encountered in Europe avian influenza was selected — because of its continuing current relevance — and information relevant for health and safety as well as protective measures described in more detail.
