Introduction: Polypathia is diagnosed when two or more illnesses are present at the same time in the one person. Information as to the incidence of polypathia in the population is very scarce. In the present study, data for the numbers of persons developing polypathia (incidence) and of persons with polypathia (prevalence) in the population were obtained, some sequelae and consequences of polypathia described and the development of polypathia in Germany until the year 2050 p redicted. Materials and Methods: To this end, the data from the 1998 Federal Health Survey and the results of the 9th coordinated population forecast were used. Results: The annual prevalence of polypathia among persons between 18 and < 80 years of age is 39.2 % in men and 57.3 % in women. With increasing age, the average number of illnesses involved increases too. In the age group between 60 and < 80 years old, every 6th man and every 4th woman has 5 or more illnesses. The annual incidence is 5.8 % for men and 6.9 % for women. Whereas an increase in the age-specific incidence in men is observed with increasing age, the incidence in young women is already high and decreases with increasing age. An exception is the group of aged women (85+ years old) in which the incidence of polypathia is extremely high. Predictive calculations of incidence and prevalence suggest that the maximum prevalence values will be seen in the years 2018 to 2025 and the maximum incidence of new polypathias around the year 2018. Then the values are expected to decrease markedly by the year 2050 to values lower than in the year in which this projection originated. Conclusions: Quantif ication of multimorbid states in the population shows that polypathia is characteristic of a large section of the population. Multimorbidity is not a priori indicative of poor health. Only in the aged is the state of health determined by the normal biological aging processes which contribute to debility and infirmness independently of polypathia. The predicted developments until the year 2050 suggest that the aging society in Germany is to be confronted with a “dramatic” increase in polypathia.
