Many women in Germany are happy about their working lives. For women there is, however, a downside to the striving for success and recognition at work. In a British-German paper, Head, Stansfeld and Siegrist (2004) show that women in senior management are more likely to develop an alcohol problem than are women in more junior positions. This may be explained by the frequent absence of social and career support which forces women to fight single-handedly, the negative consequences of which can intensify in the course of time. On account of women’s biological and physiological constitution, alcohol consumption may lead rapidly to physical and psychological malfunction.
